The paused Canada tariffs take effect

Talks collapsed; 50% in force at midnight on about $20 billion of goods

Midnight, 50 percent, about $20 billion of Canadian goods. The prime minister said the late American changes were "unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal." The trade representative said the late demands were Canada's.

"You're at war when you get attacked," Carney said the same day. "We got attacked." The answer landed on September 8: 15 to 50 percent on C$27.6 billion of American goods, which are bought, in the end, by Americans.
