The Section 122 tariff hits its 150-day limit

Expired at midnight; Section 301 tariffs took effect the next morning

In February the Supreme Court held that the emergency statute did not authorize the tariffs. The administration replaced them within hours under a different law, and that one came with a 150-day clock. The clock ran out at midnight on July 23.

New tariffs under a third statute took effect the next morning, 10 or 12.5 percent across some sixty countries. Three laws in sixteen months, and the household estimate has not moved: about $1,100 a year, with nearly 90 percent of the burden landing on American firms and consumers.
